Mango Season Starts Now
If you’ve ever walked around Puerto Vallarta in search of shade, you’ve likely found yourself cooling off under the shade of a giant, leafy mango tree. They can reach over 100 feet tall, and they live for many years. But the best time to find a mango tree is in summer, when the rosy-colored fruit is literally bending the branches to earth with their ripeness. Those giant trees can produce hundreds of fruit during a single growing season, normally between March and September each year.
There are several mango varieties, and all have something special to offer your flavor palate. We love that sweet, sun-colored fruit, and usually just eat them as-is. It’s a sticky job, and we usually find ourselves in need of a scrub after peeling off the outer covering and biting into all the sweetness. But that’s what the ocean is for, isn’t it? Sounds like the makings of a perfect afternoon to us.
Even more special are the mangoes sold by local vendors, who cut them into pretty flower shapes and put them on a stick. If you really want to go local, ask for the dried chili powder they sprinkle over it. They look beautiful and taste even better. You’ll still need a run to the ocean after the fruit drips down the front of your bathing suit, but that’s just part of the mango experience.
Mango Toppings on our Acai Bowls
Of course, mangoes can add something special to many dishes as well. At Ono’s we love what mangoes can do for our smoothie bowls. One cup of mango is packed with nutrients – nearly 70% of the recommended daily intake for vitamin C, just to give you an example. Come on down to try our Acai Sunny Bowl, where mango pairs up with coconut milk and fruits like acai berry, banana, and pineapple to give you the perfect tropical breakfast!
